Department Mission

The mission of these programs is to go beyond preparing scientifically well - trained graduates, to educating post graduates who are not only qualified to train others, but also qualified to contribute to the advancement of the scientific understanding of our world.

Established in 1989, these two departments have assumed two highly significant duties in Eastern Mediterranean University , responding to many demands which arise due to the socio-economic, cultural and political structure of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus .

On the undergraduate program side of our mission, the Physics and Chemistry Departments offer service courses for Engineering, and Arts and Sciences students. Such service courses not only form a cornerstone in the curriculum of Engineering Faculty, but also enhance the scientific literacy of EMU students. As part of our overall mission, moreover, we offer two popular non - technical elective courses “Exploration of the Universe” (SCI 111) and Science, Technology and Society (SCI 222) which are open to all students of all disciplines.

On the graduate programs side, the Physics and Chemistry Departments offer MSc and PhD programs.

Department Facilities

Focusing on the graduate, MS and PhD, programs our departments have well - equipped research facilities.

For every MSc. or PhD student we provide an up-to-date PC. In addition, the Department of Chemistry is equipped with research laboratories to conduct research in organic photochemistry and polymer chemistry. These laboratories are equipped with fluorescence spectrophotometer, UV-visible spectrophotometer, FTIR spectrophotometer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, Rayonet photo-reactors, solar collectors, pH meters, melting point apparatus, UV lamps, Ubblohde viscometers, and chromatographic separation systems.

To teach freshman students the basic principles and laboratory techniques at an introductory level, we have one modern laboratory for general Chemistry and two standard general Physics laboratories.

Distinguishing Attributes

We are inspired by our philosophy that the mission of education and its institutions are not bound only to train people for vocation, but also to displace and correct primitive notions with advanced ones. This will, in turn, enhance the creativity and productivity of our graduates when they are engaged in real life situations.

As a university-wide standard, our PhD students have to publish at least one paper in an internationally refereed journal listed in the Science Citation Index or Science Citation Index Expanded to be qualified for a PhD diploma. Yet they also have to lecture in some theoretical courses in general Physics and Chemistry to train themselves for their academic careers.

Job Opportunities

Our MSc and PhD graduates receive the necessary education and training to compete with the others at an international level. They are well armed with problem - solving techniques, self - discipline, creativity, self - confidence to succeed, and other critical skills in our interconnected world. These skills make our graduates strong candidates for both academic and research careers and help them succeed in many areas.

Our MSc and PhD graduates may also serve as faculty members at universities and colleges, and as research and development fellows in industrial laboratories, and the like.
