Department Mission

The Department of Computer Engineering at Eastern Mediterranean University was established in 1993. It is a new and a dynamic department that produced its first graduates in 1997. The objective of the Department of Computer Engineering is to train highly qualified engineers who have received a modern education of the highest standard.

Our department's graduate programs were established in 1996. The aim of the graduate program at the Master's level (MSc) is to improve analysis, synthesis and design abilities of students, and enrich independent and team work study skills. Furthermore, the MSc program aims to better the understanding of fundamental concepts in Computer Engineering and specialization in a specific topic. The Doctoral (PhD) program aims to produce and nourish young academicians who can educate and conduct research at worldwide standards in the computer engineering field.

Department Facilities

EMU Computer Engineering has a distinguished full time staff consisting of two professors, seven associate professors, eleven assistant professors, two instructors and thirty-one research assistants. Our department has four general-use computer laboratories, one graduation project lab, two multimedia laboratories, two logic design laboratories, one microprocessor laboratory, one circuit and electronics laboratory, and one research and development laboratory.

Distinguishing Attributes

Our department, which is one of the largest departments as well as one of the best programs in the Middle East , is in the process of certifying the global standard it has achieved in education. Undergraduate students attend courses in computer hardware, computer software, and computer networks during the four years of study. Additionally, courses are offered to our students in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, English and Economics, along with non-technical electives offered in social sciences (e.g. history, art, etc.). Students are obligated to perform a graduation project which improves their written and oral presentation skills in addition to the four technical elective courses they take during their graduation year. These technical electives are chosen from topics that are applicable to the current trends in technology.

Our Achievements

The Computer Engineering Department, along with its educational responsibilities, is contributing to the recognition and economic development of the TRNC with different research and projects. Three projects that use the advanced technology of EMU Research and Development Institute (EMRD) to design products are led by the staff of the Computer Engineering Department. Also, EMU's Computer Engineering Department is trying to promote EMU and the TRNC abroad through international projects and arrangements. Examples of these contracts and arrangements are the contracts with Alcatel, Microsoft and Cisco companies. EMU's Computer Engineering Department also took part in the MEDISAT project which is an INDO-DC project included in the European Union fourth framework, and contributed to its success. EMU's Computer Engineering Department is also involved in the computer-aided distance education project.

Quality of Graduates

Our department aims an education at global standards, and is interested in the career conditions of our graduates, in this regard; it redirects and focuses the students' course of study to the current needs and wants of the information technology industry by careful selection of technical elective courses. Parallel to the current trends in technology and developments in the information technology field, the fact that the medium of instruction in the department is English and that there is a ten percent foreign student population, allows our Turkish students to acquire cross-cultural information and opportunity to work anywhere in their respective fields. Some of our graduates are currently enrolled in graduate programs in the United States of America and England , and others are working in respectable businesses in Turkey , the TRNC and other countries. This is an indicator of the prestige earned by a Computer Engineering graduate of EMU.

Job Opportunities

Students successfully completing the graduation requirements are granted BSc degree in “Computer Engineering”. Graduates can find jobs as system administrators, application developers, managing engineers in computer centers, database administrators, designers and analysts of computer aided industrial applications, and as engineers in research and development projects. Also, among our graduates are academic staff who chose academia as a career and are contributing to education and scientific research in several different universities.
