Program Mission

The aim is to provide different sectors of industry with creative, multi-dimensional, entrepreneurial, and leading industrial designers who have a strong technological background, high managerial skills, knowledge of manufacturing and marketing techniques, and are sensitive to environmental issues.

Industrial Design is a rapidly developing profession. Today the role of skillful Industrial designers in the development of different fields of industry is undeniable. The aim of the Industrial Design Program is to provide different sectors of industry with creative, multi-dimensional, entrepreneurial, and leading industrial designers who have a strong technological background, high managerial skills, knowledge of manufacturing and marketing techniques, and sensitive to environmental issues.

The philosophy of the program is to engage students in a meaningful problem solving process where the challenge of solving problems related to design of mass produced objects is matched with the students' knowledge and skills to obtain a state of optimal simulation and challenge. That's why “learning by doing” phrase can summarize our pedagogical approach to Industrial Design education.

To be able to keep pace with the rapidly changing world and to let the future designers to think, learn and intervene creatively with contemporary issues related to design, the program has been structured in a way that students have the opportunity to develop their skills in different dimensions.

Distinguishing Attributes

As mentioned, the structure of the program aims at allowing students to develop their skills in different dimensions related to the field. Thus, the program offers students a wide range of courses in different disciplines. In addition, a high number of elective courses in the program allows students to improve themselves in their own fields of interests.

The design studios in the program create very special multi-cultural, interactive and participatory learning environments based on learning by doing pedagogical approach.

One year of common foundation courses in all departments of the Faculty of Architecture (Architecture, Interior Architecture and Industrial Design) provides students with the opportunity of transferring to other Departments within the Faculty and obtaining a second major in a relatively short time, if they wish.

Opportunities Offered

As design is the core of education in this program, students work in modern studios. In addition to the two CAD labs equipped with well-developed computerized facilities and software, 24-hour internet connection; there are material, environmental, model making and photo labs available to all students in the Faculty.

Futhermore, a very well equipped manufacturing techniques lab and a materials lab are available for the students enrolled in this program.

The EMU Library houses a rich collection of periodicals and books related to different fields of art and design.

Quality of Graduates

The multi-disciplinary approach of the program provides the graduates with a theoretical basis in a wide range of subjects related to the discipline, and with a lot of experience in designing mass produced products in different scales. This diversity allows them to adapt themselves to different situations in their future career. On the other hand, students gain necessary practical knowledge through lab works and internship in factories and offices.

Additionally, all graduates of the Department are well-equipped with computer skills, which creates a big advantage for them in the job market.

Job Opportunities

Industrial Design as a field covers a wide range of design activities such as furniture design, jewelry design, house utensil design, electric and electronic equipment design, package design, etc. Thus, our graduates are offered a wide array of job opportunities. They may work in factories as well as design offices or as free-lance designers.

In addition, the graduates can continue their studies in any field related to design activities in order to be specialized in one field or further their education by attending graduate programs.
