Program Goals
Demand for MIS professionals is high and
expected to rise even further in the future. Unlike computer
science or computer engineering graduates who possess in-depth
IT knowledge but have difficulty in understanding and solving
business problems, MIS graduates possess extensive knowledge of
both the business and IT worlds. MIS graduates excel in finding
new and innovative ways of using information technology to
improve business operations in marketing, production, accounting
and finance, human resources, and strategic planning. MIS
graduates are employed by IT firms to understand and satisfy
their customers’ needs as well as by a wide range of businesses
that wish to exploit information technology to get ahead in the
competition.
The MIS program curriculum places almost
equal weight on information technology and on business and
management. The program covers an extensive range of topics
including computer architecture, networks, databases,
programming languages, computer security, and Internet
programming. The electives enable students to either broaden
their horizons or focus deeper on a particular subject area such
as object-oriented programming or network management.
Program Facilities
The MIS program is offered using the
facilities of the Faculty of Business and Economics which houses
multi-media and regular lecture rooms and computer facilities
that have at present around 130 PCs for around 700 students. In
addition, students make use of the computer facilities which are
open to students from all faculties.
A Different Education
MIS students differ from others because of
the extensive curriculum they follow which includes social
science courses such as human resources management and
communication, and technical courses such as computer
architecture and Internet programming. Such a highly
interdisciplinary education demands that MIS students receive
more individual attention to overcome their weaknesses and
further develop themselves in line with their personal interest
and ambitions. At the School, we take pride in the close rapport
we have with our students and strive to do our best to assist
each individual to realize their potential to the full extent.
What is the market value of our graduates?
MIS programs have sprung up in universities
around the world in response to the rising demand from
businesses and public sector organizations. Even so, the demand
for MIS professionals is set to outstrip supply for the
foreseeable future.
Nevertheless, information technology is a
vast and rapidly expanding field and the market value of an MIS
graduate depends on whether he/she possesses the right set of
skills and knowledge for finding IT-enabled solutions for
problems in real-life contexts. Our program places great
emphasis on immersing students in real-life scenarios and
encouraging them to adopt bold, innovative approaches.
Job Opportunities for MIS Graduates
MIS graduates are sought by all businesses
and organizations which rely heavily on information technology
to get things done. MIS professionals can work on the supply
side, in the product design or marketing departments of IT
companies which design and sell IT-based products and
solutions. Alternatively, they can work in businesses and
organizations in a wide variety of sectors, analyzing when,
where, and how their organization can make the best use of
various IT tools, and preparing and managing IT initiatives for
doing so, whilst taking into account such factors as changing
market conditions, competitors, finances, and advances in
various technologies. |
