Department Mission
Our primary goal is to achieve excellence in education and research in applied mathematics and computer science. Our department is aiming at research that will secure itself a place in the forefront with other famous universities of the world.
With a strong belief in our intellectual and academic freedom, we value the generation and propagation of knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Our aim is a high quality education to prepare our students for a lifelong, self - directed learning, helping them to pursue scholarly activities while exhibiting a high degree of professionalism. They will be prepared to contribute to the development of a better world by focusing on new solutions for intellectual, scientific and technical problems. Dedicated members of the department will help the students in exploiting their abilities to the limit in the quest for knowledge, to promote their intellectual growth and development to serve their country and the world at large. Scientific research is another prime duty of an academician in parallel to teaching activities. Such effort will no doubt reflect on to the quality of education as well as the academic advancement of the junior faculty. Collaboration with other universities having research in similar topics is already underway and furthering this collaboration with some other universities is planned.
Distinguishing Attributes
The Education given by our department has gone well beyond the traditional “Instructor at the black board, student at the desk” mode, depending on the nature of the subject. Utilizing the computer labs motivates students towards a better learning process. In addition to this, instructors and assistants are always available to their students even outside the office hours helping them in better understanding the topics as well as developing intellectually and culturally. Preparations are also under way towards the establishment of “Help Desks” where instructors and assistants will be available to give further help to the students in their studies
Department Facilities
In terms of the number of courses taught and the activity of research, the Mathematics Department is one of the largest departments of Eastern Mediterranean University . The full-time faculty in the academic year 2004 - 2005 includes 4 professors, 10 associate professors, 8 assistant professors and 2 lecturers from 9 different countries. All staff members are active in research and have close relationships with well-known universities and research centers around the world. Faculty members are also dedicated teachers who are constantly working on ways to educate their students better and to develop curricula. A low faculty to student ratio enables closer contact between students and instructors, both inside the classroom, and during office hours. Four computer labs equipped with the latest state-of- the-art computers with Internet connection and all necessary software enable the students to explore their abilities in learning towards the limit.
Quality of Graduates
The high quality education received enables our students to generate new knowledge from existing information, develop the ability to give the correct decision, find professional solutions to problems, respect ethical values, be conscious about the environment, and be aware of their responsibilities towards the community and humanity. Equipped with these characteristics and excellent mathematics and computer science knowledge, our students will become confident, successful individuals, and gain the respect of the environment in which they will be pursuing their careers. Such graduates are always sought by prospective employers both nationally and internationally.
Job Opportunities
The undergraduate program in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science has been designed to meet the specialized personnel requirements of modern industry, commerce and education. The growth in computer technology has also made the fields of numerical analysis, computer science and computer programming areas of intense activity. At present, there is a serious shortage of adequately trained instructors in computer science and mathematics at all levels. Equipped with modern knowledge, technical skills and the ability to learn, graduates of the Department of Mathematics are qualified to work in almost all areas in the private and public sectors.
We are confident and proud in saying this, since most of our past graduates have been employed by companies active in many different sectors, ranging from airways to hospitals, from software development to education sector. Some have established their own software companies, while others have continued in academic careers and some are already Assistant Professors in different universities including EMU. |
